Roaming Rhymes

Omar, a Moroccan-Canadian, age 64, is the host of the radio show named Quand la musique vagabonde. The morning the film begins, he reveals a story through the songs he plays. He tells his listeners, but especially his adult daughter, Assia, about an improbable love story between two university students in Romania, in the late 1970s. In those days, like all the countries of the Eastern Bloc, Romania is courting students from Africa. One of them is a handsome Moroccan with a velvet voice. And that’s who Serafina, a brilliant daughter of simple peasants and a poster child for the Communist Party, falls in love with. This passionate union will unleash the wrath of the Party; of the feared Securitate, who spy on everything and everyone; and also the wrath of her own family. Listening to the radio that day, a few hours before her mother’s funeral, Assia discovers, far too late, the sacrifices her mother made for love.

Written and Directed by Ania Jamila. Script edited by Benoît Pilon and Isabelle Raynauld. Produced by Josiane Blanc. Co-produced by Ania Jamila.

In Development, selected and supported by the EAVE Internation Co-Production Program and the INIS Mentorship Program, Canada Council for the Arts and Telefilm Canada.
